NAEVUS OF HORI print home print home

WHAT IS A NAEVUS OF HORI?

A nevus of Hori is a brown or brownish-blue patchy discoloration on the face. It occurs almost exclusively in Asian women and develops in middle age (around 40-50 years old). It is common in Japan. The cause is unknown.

WHAT DOES A NAEVUS OF HORI LOOK LIKE?

With nevus of Hori, bluish-brown spots appear symmetrically on the face, often on the cheeks, forehead, temples, eyelids, nostrils, and bridge of the nose.

HOW IS THE DIAGNOSIS MADE?

The diagnosis is based on the clinical picture and its appearance. Sometimes a sample ( skin biopsy ) is taken. A nevus of Hori can resemble a nevus of Ota , which also occurs on the face and primarily in Asian women. However, a nevus of Ota begins at a younger age, is almost always on one side of the face, has a more bluish color, and often affects the eye as well. With a nevus of Hori, the eyes are not affected.

WHO CAN GET A NAEVUS OF HORI?

Hori's nevus occurs almost exclusively in middle-aged women of Asian background.

HOW IS A NAEVUS OF HORI TREATED?

Treatment is not medically necessary; a nevus of Hori does not cause any symptoms and is a benign condition. However, sometimes patients do seek treatment for cosmetic reasons.

A nevus of Hori can be treated with a laser. The pigment is deeply embedded and therefore not easy to remove; multiple treatments are necessary. The degree of improvement depends on the skin type (the lighter the skin, the better the result) and the location of the condition (conditions on the eyelids respond less well than on the cheeks). The laser methods used are the Q-switched (QS) ruby laser and the QS Nd:YAG laser. Sometimes the laser treatment is combined with a bleaching cream.

Another option is to camouflage the spots with makeup in the appropriate color.
