Orange palpebral spots

Orange palpebral spots (orange discoloration of the skin on the upper eyelid or eyebrows) are a rare condition that often goes unrecognized. It was first described by Assouly et al. in 2008. It is a symmetrical orange to orange-yellow discoloration of the skin in the medial corners of the eyes, usually the medial portion of the upper eyelids. They are small oval spots, often no larger than 1-1.5 cm long. It occurs primarily in women and usually begins in middle age. It is more common or more noticeable in fairer skin types. The exact cause is unknown. Carotene accumulation in adipocytes or lipofuscin deposits are suspected. It is a benign condition without significance. No abnormalities are found in the blood, no elevated concentrations of cholesterol, lipids, carotenoids, vitamin E, or retinol. Many of the women affected consumed a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
