This brochure contains information on various topics that may be important to you if you are undergoing breast reduction or firming surgery.
Many women experience problems with overly heavy and/or sagging breasts. The abnormal weight of the breasts can cause back, shoulder, and/or neck pain. The abnormal shape of the breasts is also often experienced as repulsive or embarrassing. If one primarily suffers from sagging breasts without gaining weight, the problems are often purely psychological.
After the surgery, the breasts will be smaller and firmer, but scars will always remain. It is not always possible to make the breasts symmetrical, and the shape and sensitivity of the nipples may also be different than you expected.
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. During the surgery, some breast tissue along with the skin is removed, a new, smaller breast is formed, and the nipple is also repositioned.
A circular scar will be created around both areolas. Most techniques also involve a scar in the skin fold under the breast and a vertical scar between the nipple and the fold under the breast. The wounds are closed with very fine sutures, and unless internal sutures are used, the sutures will be removed within one to two weeks. Drains can be inserted to drain blood and fluid from the wound. In most cases, hospitalization will be necessary.
The plastic surgeon will take the patient's wishes regarding shape, size, and firmness into account as much as possible. However, it will not always be possible to fully realize these wishes. It should be noted that due to the significant tension in the tissues after surgery, the final appearance will be different than immediately after the correction. Furthermore, it should be noted that breast reduction or breast enhancement surgery does not include correction of excess tissue under the armpits (which may extend to the back). Sagging that has already begun will continue after this shape-enhancing surgery and can negatively impact the initial result in the long run. General weight gain, pregnancy, or the use of birth control pills can also cause the breasts to become heavier again.
The plastic surgeon cannot guarantee a specific bra cup size after the surgery. In most cases, the cup size will decrease by a few sizes. The new breast shape is created by internally transferring fat and breast tissue. In rare cases, subcutaneous thickenings may develop, causing pain and possibly requiring surgical removal.
After surgery, the symmetry, shape, and scars of the breasts may be disappointing. Sensation loss in the nipples can also be disturbing. The final appearance of the scars is not entirely predictable. Especially where they extend far toward the armpits, they can become quite thick, red, and tender. Over months, sensitivity diminishes, and they become thinner and whiter, but may also widen.
Finally, impaired wound healing and tissue necrosis can lead to less favorable results. In rare cases, nipple tissue necrosis can occur.
We have attempted to inform you about the surgery above. However, such a description can never be complete, and no guarantee regarding results can be derived from the above. Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery is not an exact science. We cannot guarantee the results or an uneventful course of treatment. Complications can always arise, such as anesthesia problems, thrombosis of the leg, infection, hematoma, tissue necrosis, numb skin, etc. Absolute symmetry cannot be guaranteed with bilateral surgeries. Sometimes, additional surgery is necessary to achieve a good final result. This additional surgery may incur additional costs that must be covered by your insurance or by you.
We will treat you to the best of our ability, and if you have any further questions, please make another appointment at the Plastic Surgery clinic. We are happy to answer all your questions. |
