Background
Coal tar is the by-product in the distillation of coal. It is used as a topical anti-eczematic and anti-psoriatic agent. A study of 72 patients with psoriasis found that out of 13 patients who reported intolerance to coal tar were actually allergic (Burden et al.). The authors suggest patch-testing patients who are unable to tolerate coal tar preparations.
