Benzoyl peroxide home ICD10: L23.9

Formula CAS
C14H10O4 94-36-0

Background
Benzoyl peroxide is an antimicrobial and keratolytic agent used in the treatment of acne. It is also present in foods. It is a catalyst for cross-linking in the production of plastics and is occasionally used in acrylic resin systems (eg. composite dental fillings, dental prothesis: it is formed during the cross-linking process and will therefore not be mentioned as a component of the resin system). It is used in stretching tapes used in the treatment of leg ulcers. Benzoyl peroxide is metabolized in the skin to benzoic acid. Positive patch tests to benzoyl peroxide may be explained by a contact allergy to benzoic acid.
