Background
Bacitracin is an antibiotic polypeptide complex produced by Bacillus subtillis and Bacillus licheniformis and is effective against gram-positive organisms and spirochetes. Bacitracin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by inhibiting dephosphorylation of lipid pyrophosphate. Commercial bacitracin is a mixture of at least nine bacitracins. Bacitracin A is the major component of commercial bacitracins. Bacitracin appears to be a particularly common allergen in leg ulcer treatment and post-operatively.
